The 6 Biggest Movie Trailer Debuts from Super Bowl 2024

The biggest battle during the Super Bowl is never on the field. It's for your attention during the many ad breaks.

The biggest football game of the year has come and gone, but if you’re like me, you really don’t care who wins the Super Bowl, but you do show up for the goodies served up during timeouts. And I’m not talking about hot wings and pizza.

The Big Game is often our first peek of the year at the big movies to come and this year did not disappoint. Even in a year with only one Marvel Studios movie on the schedule, it’s not an inconsequential one.

Deadpool & Wolverine gives us the team-up we’ve always dreamed of since Wolverine Origins gave comic fans the epic confrontation in a way NOBODY wanted. Everything about this films seems like a direct effort to counteract that iconic travesty, even if this is likely the true final appearance of Hugh Jackman in the role that made him famous. This first official trailer’s sole purpose is to assure fans that the same mistake will not be made twice.

Between dropping an F-bomb in a non-red band trailer and making references to things that to this point have never been mentioned in a Disney film, Marvel seems to be quelling any fan fears that this will be a neutered, Disney-fied version of Wade Wilson and the gang. It doesn’t seem that anyone needs to worry until someone humorlessly complains loud enough about certain lines presented within. Could this become the most consequential Marvel Cinematic Universe movie ever?

Deadpool & Wolverine

Another transplant from 20th Century Studios, like Deadpool before it, is the most recent, epic Planet of the Apes saga. I really loved the darker, more serious take on the beloved mythology of apes taking over the world as depicted in the last 3 films. The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes finally takes us into the classic era we were first introduced to in the 1960s with Charlton Heston, when the world has truly flipped upside down. Apes rule a rich, diverse society and humans are the nomadic savages living in the wilderness and treated as simple animals. I wonder if any spacemen might have a crash landing by the end of the film? And I wonder who the actors depicting them might be? Feels like a potential after credits sequence to me.

When I first compiled this list, I figured there would be maybe 2 sequels. “Twisters” could count as a 3rd sequel, but it could just as easily count as a remake with an “s” at the end. I don’t know what to expect other than possibly much better flying cow effects between the storm chasing rivalry being set up in this teaser.

Twisters

If you can’t get enough Ryan Reynolds in your Super Bowl ads, here’s a merc-with-a-mouth-free alternative. “IF” is a fantasy family friendly comedy starring Reynolds, Steve Carell, John Krasinski (who also wrote and directed), Emily Blunt, Louis Gossett Jr, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and more than a few more familiar faces/voices I won’t spoil for you (it’s a long list). What would life be like if your imaginary friends were more real than you ever expected? This movie will show you.

IF

Based on the classic stage musical which was in turn inspired by the iconic Wizard of Oz film (from the L Frank Baum novel), the musical “Wicked” is near and dear to many people’s hearts, launching the careers of none of other than Idina Menzel (Elsa from Frozen) herself when it first launched on Broadway. However, this film version of the story stars even more new faces mixed in with people you may already know, like Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Arian Grande as Glinda the Good Witch. Cynthia Erivo stars as the supposed green skinned Wicked Witch, Elphaba. Get ready for big production to match the big songs that enraptured a generation of Wicked fans on stages around the world.

Are you tired of guys named Ryan yet? Here’s a different one to mix things up. But if you were hoping to escape any mention of Taylor Swift during the Super Bowl for even a few minutes, sorry to disappoint you. The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, follows the life of a stuntman drawn back into a life of action and danger while making the possibly the biggest movie of his career. And when he assumes this might also be the biggest mistake of his life, he just might be right. Based on the classic action TV series, The Fall Guy, starring Lee Majors, this is one more 2024 movie starring a Ryan that looks like it’s going to be 100% fun.
