When Anime Expo in LA returned this summer, it was (pardon the expression in these trying times) a breath of fresh air. Now, with Anime Expo Chibi 2022 in Ontario, California, we’re getting a double dose of anime and Japanese culture fun not far from home. Consider it an anime booster. (sorry)
While the location was different and MUCH smaller, all of the familiar trappings were there. The main hall was filled with aisles of collectible statues, figurines, plush toys, and cosplay weaponry. In the structure that was set up in the main parking lot, Artist Alley was packed with new and returning talent, skilled in all kinds of Japanese-centric artforms. And in rooms scattered over two floors, you could find panels and gaming competitions and demos of every type.
Of course, no Anime Expo would be complete without the fantastic array of creative cosplayers roaming every inch of the venue, inside and out, showing off their costuming skills.
Outside, the lot was filled with food trucks, mostly focusing on authentic Japanese cuisine, just beyond the outdoor stage, where live performances culminated in each evening as part of the Night Market. Dancing, singing, and waving around light sticks was greatly encouraged.
This was the first of hopefully many future Anime Expo Chibi (“small”) style events, especially after the convention drought we’ve experienced over the last two years. But if this sold out event grows beyond its current format and venue, it might not remain very chibi for long.
Anime Expo 2023 returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center July 1-4, 2023.
