San Diego Comic-Con gathers the geeks once again!

It’s 2022, and the most famous Comic-Con in the world has returned to San Diego!

There are countless cons around the world, but few match the spectacle of San Diego Comic-Con. While some have found its constant expansion into wider audiences and deeper forms of geekdom and growing mania intimidating or even exhausting, it took a pandemic and two years off to remind us of what we missed most – the geeks!

Okay, I’m a bit biased, as I wrote the San Diego Comic-Con Survival Guide. The book is a love letter, but it was written at a time when the shift and the influence of cons like San Diego and others like it were being felt in ways no one ever expected. And now, more than a decade since its original publication, after a global event that none of us could have seen coming, the rules have all changed. Or have they?

As we like to say here at The CONmunity, these things don’t happen without the PEOPLE who fill those halls. You can shift around the booths or bring in new celebrities or throw tons of swag at everyone who walks in the door, but it always comes back to the people behind the tables, in the costumes, and buying all the collectibles in sight, not to mention the people running the show.

I wrote a little bit about my experience at the newly reborn SDCC over at my San Diego Comic-Con Survival Guide site. Did it live up to expectations? Could it? And what is it like to return to our geeky home away from home after three years away?
