WonderCon Anaheim Moves to LA in 2016 – Plus, Cosplay Pics and More from 2015

The news came toward the end of the 3 day show, attended by an estimated 60,000 attendees, during the organizers’ yearly feedback panel, where they meet with the fans and answer any questions they can. When someone asked if they would be returning to Anaheim next year, they said “no” and revealed that WonderCon would be moving to the Los Angeles Convention Center next spring, currently home to big geek industry and fan conventions like E3 Expo, Anime Expo, and Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo. They did not confirm what week it would take place, but it’s a safe bet that it would be scheduled over Easter weekend once again. I’ve been going to WonderCon since they held it in San Francisco and I can’t remember a year when they didn’t hold it on Easter weekend (prove me wrong, WonderCon!).

Yes, this is the second move for the famed little sister to the biggest con in the west, San Diego Comic-Con. But why another move? Apparently, the Anaheim Convention Center will begin construction on a new expansion starting in October 2015 and it would still be well underway by April 2016. This gives a little bit of hope to the convention-goers who have begged Comic-Con International to move out of San Diego to allow more space and more attendees. Places like Anaheim, Los Angeles, and even Las Vegas have always been touted as viable alternatives (I don’t agree, but that’s a story for another time). Now with WonderCon moving from Anaheim to Los Angeles (possibly only for one year, maybe more), those fans have a taste for how a Comic-Con International run event would be handled in at least 2 of the 3 potential cities. WonderCon obviously doesn’t have the star power, the big publishers and studios, or the prime summer weekend. As a result, they don’t draw in even half the attendees San Diego Comic-Con gets, but it has room to grow. So maybe those cities could get the Comic-Con International in LA that they’ve always wanted, just not when they wanted it, sooner than they thought.
